BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH
I became a Licensed Professional Counselor in 1987, and as Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist in 1998. I began counseling full time in 1983 and moved to Northern Virginia in 1990 to join the then newly formed Minirth-Meier and Byrd Clinic in Fairfax. I established my own private practice in 1997 and continue in that to this day.
Education
I am also an ordained minister who earned a Bachelor of Science degree in pastoral studies, a professional ministry degree that majored in Bible and minored in Theology, Greek, and Pastoral Counseling. As a senior in college I was drawn to counseling when I took courses in Pastoral Counseling. Upon realizing the importance of integrating truth with the needs of people at a more in-depth level, I earned a Masters degree in Counseling in 1983 at Liberty Seminary. I have since completed post-graduate coursework at Lynchburg College and the University of Virginia.
Experience
In addition to counseling full time, my professional experience includes teaching college and graduate level counseling courses in both the classroom and on video. I have experience in radio and co-hosted a weekly radio program on counseling issues for 2 years. I am co-author of the book, Time Out, an inspirational volume for those who work too much, published by Thomas Nelson Publishing.
I provide supervision to counselors to help them satisfy requirements for their professional counseling license in Virginia.
I conduct seminars at churches and conferences on counseling issues related to the needs of the individuals and families in these days of rapid change. Be sure to visit the Seminar page and check that out.
I apply what I believe to be the best of the various techniques of the behavioral sciences into my counseling. The primary theoretical basis for my work is the cognitive-behavioral approach. This approach is the most effective for treating depression, various anxiety problems and interpersonal skills. My pastoral training and extensive coursework in Bible and theology strengthens my ability to discern and apply appropriate practical aspects of scripture into the counseling.
